Accommodation Options for Spanish Students in Antigua Guatemala:
Guesthouse
Traditionally, a family homestay is an integral part of every Spanish immersion course and most of our students choose this option to increase their exposure to native Spanish speakers. Not everyone is comfortable living in the home of a local family, however, and we will be happy to provide other accommodations if you feel they would suit you better than a homestay.
There is no shortage of hotels in Antigua, and we also work with several guesthouse where our students can stay. The rooms in a guesthouse are very similar to the ones our host families provide, but they come without meals. Instead, you can use the kitchen to cook your own meals if you are so inclined.
While staying at a guesthouse will give you more privacy and make you independent of the host families' meal times, you will also have less opportunity to practice your Spanish with native speakers. In our experience, most students in the guesthouse speak English or their native languages when they chat with each other, not Spanish.
The guesthouses we work with are located in nice residential areas within a few blocks from the school. The walk to the school takes about 5 to 10 minutes and most other places of interest in Antigua are within easy walking distance as well.
The guesthouses are quite popular with our students and sometimes booked out several weeks in advance, especially during the high season (Christmas - New Year, Easter week, and June thru August). If you'd like to stay at the guesthouse, we recommend that you sign up as early as your travel plans permit.
