What Our Students Say ...

Andrew

Ixchel was very welcoming and the perfect way to settle into Antigua. Although two weeks is too short, it has been a great introduction to Spanish. I would recommend Ixchel to anyone wanting to learn Spanish, explore Antigua and learn about Guatemalan culture. I can't wait to come back!

Carrie

I had a very good experience at Ixchel Spanish School. My teacher Isabel was excellent! I only attended for 2 weeks, but I learned enough to have simple conversations in Spanish and to ask common questions and to understand the answers. The program was flexible but well organized. I appreciated the focus on grammar and vocabulary.

Making Tortillas

Breakfast, lunch or dinner, tortillas are served with almost every meal in Guatemala.Learning how to make tortillas is one of our most popular activities.Traditionally tortillas are cooked over an open fire. But if you can't have an open fire at home, any hot plate will do.
Tortillas are most often made from corn flour, although wheat is also used, particularly outside of Central America.Making tortillas is easy! You start with a ball of dough and flatten it with your hands.Did I say easy? Okay, it does take some practice until they come out perfectly round. In fact, some say it takes years of practice until you can do it effortlessly.
Learning how to do it is a lot of fun, though.Fortunately tortillas taste just as great if their shape is a bit irregular.Next, the tortillas go on an earthenware plate called comal and are cooked over an open fire.Cooking the tortillas takes only a few minutes.
The tortillas are cooked until they begin to show brown spots.Experienced cooks handle the tortillas only with their fingers, but you can also use tongs if you are afraid you might burn your knuckles. And here's the best part -- eating the tortillas you've just made!Enjoy your meal!
